October 30 - Confirmation

Opening Song

“Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing” - Hymnal #807

Leader:      We gather together in the powerful name of God our Father, Jesus his only Son, and the Holy Spirit our Protector and Guide...Amen.

Leader:    As children of God we have been called by Christ to “Come and follow me.” It’s an invitation that can and will literally change our entire life. In our baptism we were given the gift of the Holy Spirit and claimed as God’s very own.

All:    And today we celebrate the act of confirming our baptism – of boldly declaring that we belong to Christ.

Leader:    Today is a day of celebration and joy. Today the voices of young people declare that they will love and live as Christ invites them to.

All:    May we forever walk in the power of God’s Holy Spirit knowing that in Jesus Christ we have the gift of forgiveness and life in all its abundance. Amen

Leader:     The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

Cong:     And also with you.

Prayer of the Day

Leader:     O Lord Jesus, it is with great joy that we come together this afternoon to celebrate the faith of these young people. Instill in them and us a renewed sense of your power and strength as well as your tender love and compassionate care. May the vows they take today be but the beginning of an even greater commitment. Strengthen them in their faith; encourage them in their walk with you; and may they never for a moment doubt that you are by their side. And all God’s people said loudly…AMEN!

Psalm 139

 O Lord, you have searched me and known me.

 You know when I sit down and when I rise up;

 you discern my thoughts from far away.

 You search out my path and my lying down,

 and are acquainted with all my ways.

 Even before a word is on my tongue,

 O Lord, you know it completely.

 You hem me in, behind and before,

 and lay your hand upon me.

 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me;

 it is so high that I cannot attain it.

Holy Gospel: Matthew 18:1-5, 10-14

     At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” He called a child, whom he put among them, and said, “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever becomes humble like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me.

     “Take care that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I tell you, in heaven their angels continually see the face of my Father in heaven.  What do you think? If a shepherd has a hundred sheep and one of them has gone astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine on the mountains and go in search of the one that went astray? And if he finds it, truly I tell you, he rejoices over it more than over the ninety-nine that never went astray. So it is not the will of your Father in heaven that one of these little ones should be lost.

The Gospel of the Lord...Thanks be to God.
