May 22 - Sixth Sunday of Easter

8:00 & 9:00am

Opening Song

“Alleluia! Sing to Jesus” - #392 vs 1-2

Leader:    It is in our confession where we realize our desire for God and our hope for God’s mercy. It is in admitting the truth of our lives that we take the first step toward wholeness and healing. God of all the saints, God of all sinners, hear our confession.

Cong:    We would be saintlike – holy, good, patient, loving, but we end up feeling more like sinners – full of failures of morality, selfish, mean. Forgive the wrong that we have done. Keep on loving us, helping us, and molding us more and more into the image of Christ, in whose name we pray. Amen.

Leader:    Friends, hear this Good News: the love of God is beyond measure, and you are included in that love. Know that you are forgiven and thus freed to love and serve.

Cong:    Alleluia! Amen.

Leader:      The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

Cong:     And also with you.

Song of Praise

“Change My Heart, O God” - #801

Prayer of the Day

Leader:    Almighty God, your blessed Son, our Savior Jesus Christ, ascended far above all heavens that he might fill all things. Mercifully give us faith to trust your promise that you will abide with us to the end of time.  And all God’s people said loudly....Amen!

Lesson: Acts 1:1-11

In the first writing, I worked on, Theophilus, everything Jesus did and taught from the beginning until the day he instructed the apostles whom he had chosen through the Holy Spirit and was taken up to heaven. Jesus presented himself to them, living, after his suffering through many convincing proofs, by appearing to them forty days and speaking about the reign of God. And staying with them, Jesus commanded them not to leave Jerusalem, rather to wait there for the promise of the Faithful God, “what you heard from me.” For John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from this one.”

When they, the disciples, came together, they asked Jesus, “Rabbi, is this the time when you will restore sovereignty to Israel?” He replied, “It is not for you to know the times or seasons that the Sovereign God has set through divine authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” And saying this, as they were watching Jesus was taken up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. While they were gazing up toward heaven as Jesus was going, suddenly two in white robes stood by them. They said, “Galileans, why are you standing looking up into heaven? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in the way as you saw him go into heaven.”

Gospel: Luke 24:44-53

Jesus said to the disciples, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you all, because everything must be fulfilled in the teaching of Moses, the prophets, and the psalms written about me.” Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures. Then he said to them, “So it is written, the Messiah is to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day, and repentance and forgiveness of sins is to be preached in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things.  Now look! I am sending you the promise of my Abba. You all stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.” Then Jesus led them out as far as Bethany, and lifting his hands, he blessed them. While he was blessing them, Jesus retreated from them and was carried up into heaven. And they worshiped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy; and they were in the temple every day blessing God.
