Daily Inspiration - August 11: 10,000 Reasons

Writer: St. Luke's ELCASt. Luke's ELCA

In early Spring 2013, my family of four was living a contented life in Eagan, MN in a house we loved, in a neighborhood we loved, walking distance to schools we loved, belonging to a church we loved, near my family of origin we loved.  My husband, Scott, had been at a job he loved for nearly 14 years but was beginning to wonder, from a professional standpoint, what other adventures might be out there.

When an opportunity at Lands' End in Dodgeville, WI came up, we prayed long and hard about leaving an existence we loved so much to move to a bunch of unknowns.  Other than the obvious professional opportunity, I kept thinking, "There's no good reason to leave."  While driving in my car one day having that exact thought, 10,000 Reasons by Matt Redman came on the radio.  Over the course of the next months as interviews were happening and home and school searches in the area were happening, this song would come on the radio when I needed it most.  10,000 Reasons won two Grammy Awards in 2013, so it could be argued that I was bound to hear it again and again that particular year.  But as a Christian, I believe it was God's message to me that there wasn't ONE good reason to trust Him but 10,000 reasons.

Spoiler alert: we moved :).

In another fun twist of fate, after enjoying St. Luke's Praise Band from the pews for a couple years, I approached Jeff about joining.  He invited me to come sing with him one afternoon to hear my range - and probably determine if I could carry a tune - and he picked a random song we could sing together.   Turned out to be not-so-random, because of all the contemporary Christian songs in all the land, he chose 10,000 Reasons.

10,000 Reason by Matt Redman

Bless the Lord O my soul O my soul Worship His Holy name Sing like never before O my soul I’ll worship Your Holy name

The sun comes up It’s a new day dawning It’s time to sing Your song again Whatever may pass And whatever lies before me Let me be singing When the evening comes

You’re rich in love And You’re slow to anger Your name is great And Your heart is kind For all Your goodness I will keep on singing

Ten thousand reasons For my heart to find

And on that day When my strength is failing The end draws near And my time has come Still my soul will Sing Your praise unending

Ten thousand years And then forevermore
