The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases, his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. “The LORD is my portion,” says my soul, “therefore I will hope in him.”
Hope is a gift of grace. Hope goes hand-in-hand with trust and faith. We can hope for a number of things. I can hope for reconciliation and justice among people. I can hope for just leadership. I can hope that people will behave with love and kindness for one another. I can even hope that the White Sox will win the World Series. But, all too often these hopes are dashed.
If my hope is on people, places, or things chances are I will be disappointed. People will often disappoint and not act the way we want them to. Places may not meet our expectation. And things rot, rust, or fade away. I think that’s what is wrong in our world today. We so often put our hope, our trust, and our faith in that which disappoints.
But, for me, God’s promises of life and forgiveness are where I find my hope. In times of trouble God is trustworthy. In times of doubt God is faithful. In times of confusion God gives me hope. So, as the psalmist writes, “The LORD is my portion,” says my soul, “therefore I will hope in him.” Amen
